We stopped at San Gimignano to see the small walled medieval hill town, where 14 original towers remained from the 60 or so towers built in the 3rd century by the Etruscans. The towers were built by rich people as symbols of their wealth and their power, and provided protection before the walls were built. The town was an important stopping place on the section between Lucca to Siena on a famous pilgrimage route.
Lighting candles in honor of my grandchildren while listening to the beautiful organ music, will always be my favorite memory of my visit to San Gimignano.
The region surrounding San Gimignano is famous for the Tuscan light and fruity white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. This particular grape is strictly connected to the area and cannot be found in any other region.
