Driving by The Devil's Bridge

Driving back and forth from our villa in Vitiana, we would pass the Il Ponte Del Diavola, a beautiful and yet strange bridge that connected the banks of the Serchio River. This particular bridge was located near the town of Borgo A Mozzano, near Lucca, in Tuscany.

Devil's Bridge is a term that is applied to a dozen of ancient bridges, found primarily in Europe. Most of the bridges are stone or masonry arch bridges and are significant achievements, considering the time of construction. It is interesting to note that each Devil's Bridge has a corresponding Devil-related myth or folk tale. Many of the legends include a scenario featuring a builder who makes a pack with the Devil. The Devil agrees to finish building the bridge and in return he would receive the first soul to cross it.
