Without a doubt, my sisters are my very best friends! Sometimes, Sisters of Mercy, or Sisters of No Mercy, but always sisters of support and much laughter. The "Funsome Fivesome" were my "traveling sisters" in Italy.
Visiting Vatican City, and St. Peter's Basillica in particular, was dedicated to my sister Susan and the memories of her infamous day in 1999. The terrifying event of being detained by the Vatican police for impersonating a nun (along with the tour leader, both wearing Sisters of No Mercy wimples), has become a well known story circulating among religious and non-religious circles. Today's visit, was returning to the scene of the crime, especially since the tour leader involved in the 1999 incident, was currently the tour leader of the "Funsome Fivesome". Oh, the irony of life!
We took the elevator to the top of the roof and then climbed 323 steps to the top of the dome.
A view from the top of St. Peter's Basillica,
and my favorite views from inside St. Peter's.
Michelangelo's Pieta' (behind bulletproof glass) was sculptured when he was only 24 years old. A pieta' is a work that represents Mary, the mother of Jesus with her dead son after being taken down from the cross.
